Dreams on (light) rails

Last week I attended to a summer course of the UIMP entitled “Metropolitan mobility and zoning. Light rail application and another transit systems to Galicia”.

It was a very interesting time. We could discuss about how the new transit systems can contribute to develop the territory, and how they can help to turn the big cities in human cities. Experts from Holland, Switzerland, Finland and Denmark contributed with their experiences to compare the Spanish models.

I don’t go to post exhaustively about every speaker. But I want to list some very repeated items:

  1. Every transit system need a long time to be developed.
  2. That time is not equal than the politicians time
  3. Transit systems are essential in the future in the great cities, because:
    1. we can’t bear the increasing energy consumption
    2. roads and parkings doesn’t have endless space to be laid
  4. We need to build again the city for citizens, not the citizens to the city
  5. We must consider the transit systems in the urban and territory planning
  6. Metro? light rail? rail? rapid bus? each place need its own, particular solution

The sessions were celebrated at the Caixa Galicia Foundation in Coruña. About this famous building in the city by British architect Nicholas Grimshaw, I only can say two good things about it: it has a good acoustics and a nice system for interpreting in the auditorium. It’s a big, old-fashioned, high-tech, non-integrated and unaccesible for disabled, amount of bullshit :-P
