Trojanfonica?

Filed under: Sec, crypto, forensics and priv — 曹 tsao @ 10:09 pm

Yesterday I received an odd phone call from Telefonica, my ADSL provider. They offer me a new free (as in free beer) service: if I have a breakdown in my computers, they kindly repair it. Awesome, isn’t it?

What’s the dark side of the history? Well, if I accept that service, a technician automatically come to my home. Then he installs in every machine a program so if I call needing their service, they can make basic test from remote.

Sadly I think there will be a lot of wretchs that will accept the service…

Happy birthday, happy Thinkpad!

Filed under: Free Software — 曹 tsao @ 12:27 am

There is a nice post at The Register about the 15 years of Thinkpad laptops. Since I bought my R51 three years ago (I saw very nice technical details and it has not f*ck*ng Windows keys), I loved these machines more and more. And yes, I like the aesthetics too.

If the new owner of the trademark Lenovo still make the right, my next laptop will be a Thinkpad again. Maybe an X-series? :-)

New times in the clustering world

Filed under: Free Software — 曹 tsao @ 12:06 am

We read in the latest weeks two interesting news. The happy new comes, again, from Sun Microsystems: they unveiled their new architecture Constellation. They hope to go through the 2-petaflops barrier. The first experience with this new platform will be developed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. Sun can now compete against IBM’s Blue Gene at the head of Top 500.
Via Jonathan Schwartz’s and Marc Hamilton’s blogs.

The sad new is about openMosix. It was an open platform reference in the clustering world because its easy-for-use clustering system. But founder and leader Moshe Bar announced the shutting down of the project. The main reasons are the lack of motivation to go on in a changing world because the new multicore machines.
As it was a free software project, openMosix can be developed even when it is closed. So, the market will decide.

Dreams on (light) rails

Filed under: Caminos my dear — 曹 tsao @ 3:53 am

Last week I attended to a summer course of the UIMP entitled “Metropolitan mobility and zoning. Light rail application and another transit systems to Galicia”.

It was a very interesting time. We could discuss about how the new transit systems can contribute to develop the territory, and how they can help to turn the big cities in human cities. Experts from Holland, Switzerland, Finland and Denmark contributed with their experiences to compare the Spanish models.

I don’t go to post exhaustively about every speaker. But I want to list some very repeated items:

  1. Every transit system need a long time to be developed.
  2. That time is not equal than the politicians time
  3. Transit systems are essential in the future in the great cities, because:
    1. we can’t bear the increasing energy consumption
    2. roads and parkings doesn’t have endless space to be laid
  4. We need to build again the city for citizens, not the citizens to the city
  5. We must consider the transit systems in the urban and territory planning
  6. Metro? light rail? rail? rapid bus? each place need its own, particular solution

The sessions were celebrated at the Caixa Galicia Foundation in Coruña. About this famous building in the city by British architect Nicholas Grimshaw, I only can say two good things about it: it has a good acoustics and a nice system for interpreting in the auditorium. It’s a big, old-fashioned, high-tech, non-integrated and unaccesible for disabled, amount of bullshit :-P

40 years without John

Last July, 17th was the 40 anniversary of the death of John Coltrane. It has been written millions of words about one of the five great jazzmen in the history (the numer one for me). But they are not enough to describe him. Rather these words are vain. If you really want to meet John, then hear his music. Because his music is still alive. Like himself.

La Coruña outer port

Filed under: Caminos my dear — 曹 tsao @ 9:01 pm

Some weeks ago a group of students of my Civil Engineers School went to the port of La Coruña to see the works of the new installation for bulk cargo, known as La Medusa(The Jellyfish).

La Medusa

After it, we went to Punta Langosteira to see the amazing works for the new outer port. They only built an auxilary dock and they began to build the main dock and they used more concrete than all the outer port of Ferrol. Technically this is one of more highly complex port work in Europe nowadays.

More photos in my gallery. Thanks to Coco for scan them :-) (I made the photos with my old, analogic Yashica TL Electro X)

A shot through the heart of democrats

Filed under: Rage against the world — 曹 tsao @ 9:38 pm

Ten years ago, the assassins of terrorist group ETA kidnapped a natural councillor of the little town of Ermua. They threatened to kill him if Spanish government didn’t give in their demands. Finally, that group of f*ck*ng cowards shot through his head.

In that moment, it seemed times-were-changing in the Basque society. A great movement of citizens going on the street without fear raging against ETA. And politicians of every colour were joined against terrorists.

Maybe today is a great moment to remember Miguel Ángel Blanco. Let’s look ourselves and let’s think about if his murder was a useless death.

Love the rain

Filed under: Jazz, On the road — 曹 tsao @ 10:15 pm

Today when I went off the train in the evening, it began to rain. I had 1 km. down to home, so I put my headphones and shooke off the glasses.

The water drops run on my face, but I didn’t hear the rain. Rather I didn’t hear that rain. Because it was sounding in my ears “Here’s that rainy day”, then “A time for love”. These are the first tracks of “Bill Evans Alone”(1968).

The rest of the album… well, with a nice mug of tea, a cigarrete and… sneezing a bit ;-) But I felt free in that lonely walk…

L'Albatros

Filed under: Dead Poets Society — 曹 tsao @ 2:54 pm

Qui hante la tempête et se rit de l’archer;
Exilé sur le sol au milieu des huées,
Ses ailes de géant l’empêchent de marcher.

Often, to amuse themselves, the men of the crew
Catch those great birds of the seas, the albatrosses,
lazy companions of the voyage, who follow
The ship that slips through bitter gulfs.

Hardly have they put them on the deck,
Than these kings of the skies, awkward and ashamed,
Piteously let their great white wings
Draggle like oars beside them.

This winged traveler, how weak he becomes and slack!
He who of late was so beautiful, how comical and ugly!
Someone teases his beak with a branding iron,
Another mimics, limping, the crippled flyer!

The Poet is like the prince of the clouds,
Haunting the tempest and laughing at the archer;
Exiled on earth amongst the shouting people,
His giant’s wings hinder him from walking.

Hate the sun

Filed under: Dead Poets Society, On the road — 曹 tsao @ 10:28 pm

Today began the Summer for me. Since the morning to the sunset, grey clouds opened to the sun, then they went away.
I’ll be hidden underground until I can feel again the rain drops in my face, in October.
